Why is it so hard to get rid of smoke smell?

Smoke smell — whether from cigarettes, fireplaces, or other sources — easily clings to fabrics, walls, and furniture. Smoke particles are extremely small and contain resins and oils that adhere to surfaces, making the smell linger for days or even weeks if you don’t treat it properly.

Steps to remove smoke smell from a room

1. Deep ventilation

  • Open all windows and doors to create airflow.

  • If possible, use a fan to speed up the air movement towards the outside.

  • Ventilate for at least 30 minutes before starting the cleaning process.

2. Cleaning hard surfaces

  • Wipe walls, doors, and furniture with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

  • For persistent odors, add white vinegar to the cleaning mix (it neutralizes smoke molecules).

3. Washing fabrics

  • Wash curtains, cushion covers, and blankets with hot water and detergent.

  • If they can’t be washed, hang them outside to air out.

  • For carpets and rugs, vacuum thoroughly and apply an odor-neutralizing product.

4. Treating floors

  • Mop the floors with warm water and a cleaner suitable for the flooring type.

  • For wooden floors, use specific wood-safe cleaning products to avoid damage.

5. Air purification

  • Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter and activated carbon to trap smoke particles.

  • If you don’t have a purifier, place bowls of vinegar or baking soda around the room for 24 hours.

Natural methods to remove the smell

  • White vinegar – absorbs and neutralizes odors.

  • Baking soda – ideal for carpets and sofas.

  • Lemon and hot water – cleans and leaves a fresh scent.

  • Ground coffee – absorbs odors and leaves a pleasant aroma.

Prevention: how to stop the smell from coming back

  • Avoid smoking indoors or create a designated outdoor smoking area.

  • Clean fans, air filters, and curtains regularly.

  • Carry out a deep clean at least every 3 months if the room is exposed to smoke.
